La Palma road on volcanic casting

The new road of La Costa between the municipality of Tazacorte and the town of Puerto Naos was built on hot lava and perfora casting walls of the volcano. It was put into service on 25 May 2023, restoring mobility in the Aridane Valley of the island of La Palma, following the volcanic eruption of the Old Summit, and improving accessibility to the farms and houses that had been isolated by the laundry. This is an unprecedented work in the construction of roads on recent lava, with countless technical and environmental challenges. For example, the execution of the viaduct has been carried out within 4.5 months, and the excavation of the lava-cast slopes with high temperatures took place just a few months after the end of the 85-day volcanic eruption on Christmas 2021. The 3.9 km road firm was made with a bituminous mixture in a hot laundry area, this being the first time it is made worldwide. Thus, the firm, the ants and the terracene come from the excavated, crushed and screened material on the road's own trail, being a bet on sustainability and containment in the use of raw materials.
