Ushuaia

It is the capital of the province of Tierra del Fuego (Argentina) and is recognized as one of the country's indispensable destinations. It owes its name to the bay that the Yámana people called: ush ('bottom') and waia ('bay' or 'caleta'), which means deep bay or bottom. Founded by Colonel Augusto Lasserre on 12 October 1884, Ushuaia is in a valley surrounded by the Andes, and to the south by Ushuaia Bay and the shores of the Beagle Canal, an interoceanic passage that makes its port one of the most visited on the continent. With almost 100,000 inhabitants, it receives about 500,000 tourists a year.
