Fort of San Felipe4.6The Fortress of Sao Felipe dates from the 16th century and rises at high altitude over Setubal, taking advantage of its strategic location to protect the estuary from the incursions of Arab pirates and attackers. The fortress was built under the direction of Don Felipe I when Spain and Portugal lived together under the reign of the same monarch, and the design follows a star design, of great defensive value. Inside the castle there is a delicious chapel with ancient tiles, inexpugnable almenas and one of the best views that can be admired by Setubal. The castle has been skilfully restored since it was managed by the City of Setubal, and today it is considered a major tourist attraction. The walk from Setubal to the castle is uphill and is done something heavy in summer, when it is best to take a taxi. The entrance to the fortress is free and the coffee in the almenas is of the most panoramic of Setubal. . |
