Quinta da Regaleira

The Palácio da Regaleira is the main building and the most common name of the Fifth da Regaleira. Also called Palácio do Monteiro dos Milhões (Palacio de Monteiro el de los Millones) for the name and nickname of its first owner, António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro. The palace is located in the historic centre of Sintra and is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. Carvalho Monteiro, helped by the Italian architect Luigi Manini, builds in the fifth of four hectares a palace, lustful gardens, lakes, grotto and enigmatic buildings, places that hide meanings related to alchemy, masonry, temperaries and rosacruz. It models the fifth with constructions that evoke the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Manuelin architectures.
