Chain Bridge
The Chain Bridge is the oldest bridge in Budapest and the best known bridge in the Danube. It is officially known as the Széchenyi Bridge in honor of its creator, Count István Széchenyi. Until the construction of the bridge, the Danube could only be crossed by boat or, during cold winters, walking on its frozen waters. The difficulty of crossing the Danube between stations was the main reason for the construction of the bridge. The Chain Bridge was finally opened on November 20, 1849 after 20 years of work. The current Chain Bridge is the reconstruction that was built over 150 years ago. During World War II, the Germans flew all the bridges of the city. The new bridge was opened in 1949, 100 years after the first. The most beautiful view of the bridge is obtained at night, with the Buddha's Castle illuminated at the bottom. .
