Bridge of the Chapel
The chapel bridge or Kapulbrücke is the oldest wooden bridge in Europe and the second longest with 204.70 meters. It was built in 1365 and connects the old city to the new city, crossing the Reuss River. The bridge was longer, but it suffered a fire that seriously damaged it. In 1835 this damaged part, about 75 meters, was removed from the bridge. This was possible thanks to the filling that was made from the river bank. On the roof of the bridge are 111 spaces containing paintings that show part of Lucerne's history. In the center of the bridge is the Water Tower or Wasserturm, one of the city's symbols. It is a stone octagonal tower about 30 meters high, at the end of the Middle Ages, which had a defensive purpose, but which has also been a prison and even a torture room. They say this work, built around 1300, is the most photographed monument in Switzerland.
