Put on Pietra

The Ponte Pietra (Stone Bridge), also known as the Marmoreus Pons, is a Roman arch bridge that crosses the Adige River in Verona. The bridge was completed in 100 BC, and the Via Posthumia from Genoa until Brenner's passage passed over it. At first it was flanked by another Roman bridge, the Postumio Pons, both structures provided the city (on the right bank) with access to the Roman theatre on the eastern bank. The closest arch to the right bank of the Adige River was rebuilt in 1298 by Alberto I della Scala. Four arches of the bridge were flown by German troops in retreat in World War II, but were rebuilt in 1957 with original materials. .
