Market Square (Rynek Główny)
Basilica of Santa MariaThe Basilica of St. Mary of Krakow is one of the most imposing temples in all of Poland. However, it surprises the asymmetry that we can observe in the two towers of its main facade. While the highest is up to 80 meters high, the smallest is less than seventy. The highest tower, which is the north, was also used as a city watchdog, had reported the various invasions that had ravaged the old capital of Krakow. During the 13th century, a trumpeter warned the population of the imminent Tatar invasion by sounding its instrument. However, an arrow reached his throat and the trumpet player died. In commemoration of this fact, a trumpeter goes up every hour to the northern tower of the Basilica of Santa Maria to play the song that the trumpeter played in that situation. The music is interrupted at the same time as the trumpet player reached by the Tatar arrow. |

The tower has a Gothic style, using bricks and stones to be part of the city hall, it was built in the 14th century. After the demolition of the City Council in 1820, she was as alone as she can see today. As you walk through the door guarded by two Stone Lions you will access the tower, to begin to climb the 110 steps of stone you will find inside. On the first floor of the tower you will find one of the most beautiful Gothic-style spaces in the city. As you continue the climb you will access the upper plants of the tower where you will see the machining of the old clock of the tower, and some photographs that illustrate the past of Krakow. You will have the possibility to look through the small windows of the tower on one of the plants, although by the small of these, the view is not very good. In the basement of the tower were the dungeons of the city, where torture was so horrible and ruthless, which led the interviewees to plead guilty even if they were not. If you want to go up to enjoy the views, it is important to tell you that the climb on the steep stairs becomes a little difficult for some people, so you must have this present when visiting this monument. |
