Hietaniemi beach
If you are in Helsinki and you are looking for a getaway from the city without getting too far away, Hietaniemi beach should be on your list. This peaceful corner, better known as Hietsu by the locals, offers fine sand and relaxation opportunities just steps from the city center. With views of the district of Töölö and next to the cemetery of Hietaniemi, the beach has an intriguing history. At the beginning of the 20th century, the area was used as a landfill and sand tank, which was transported by sea but never really used, and eventually became a beach. Since 1929, it has become a place of recreation for the inhabitants of the city. In addition to its history, a prominent element is the solar stone watch designed in 1931 by Gerda Qvist, located on the adjacent hill. Hietsu has also become a meeting point for beach puke lovers and has hosted music festivals such as Rock the Beach and Weekend Festival, becoming a place of culture and fun.
