Hernandez Park

Located in the heart of the city, in the Modernist Enchanche, surrounded by buildings of great beauty, is the largest in extension of all that are in Melilla. To learn more about the history of this park we went to the work of the doctors Juan A. González and Carmen Enrique, Botanical Tours in the city of Melilla: The oldest of Melilla's parks came from the idea of transforming the great explanade by which the Golden River had run, before the beginning in 1872 of the works for its detour through the south of the Cerro de San Lorenzo, in a place of leisure for the growing Melillense population. It was Mr Venancio Hernández Fernández, who arrived in Melilla as a new General Commander in 1899 who decided, with an undoubted vision of the future, to transform a large, dirty and untapped land, where the lands taken from the new channel were poured and military exercises were carried out, in a forest park with a beautiful and varied set of plant species. To that end, he had the economic suffrage of the Board of Arbitrios, then the governing body of the city, of which he assumed the presidency at the end of 1899. The project was carried out by the military engineer Mr Vicente García del Campo, and the works were completed in the spring of 1902 when it was officially opened in Parque Hernández. .
