Plaiaundi Ecological Park

The Park has 24 hectares of extension; it consists of two inner lagoons connected with the tidal rhythm through a system of gates, and an intertidal beach, as well as a freshwater lagoon. At the entrance of the Park is the Interpretation Centre, where guided tours for groups are organized. On the other hand, it is possible to visit the Park by performing the self-guided itinerary, composed of 17 explanatory panels distributed along 2 km of route. In addition, in Plaiaundi, there are several spaces for bird observation. This Ecological Park is, along with Urdaibai, one of the most important enclaves on the entire Basque coast for the fauna. There are many species of birds that can be observed in Plaiaundi, although it is worth noting the number of light, palustres and marine birds that use the area as a place of rest and food during their migratory movements, inverted and, to a lesser extent, during the period of breeding. Its strategic situation, between the sea and the mountain barrier of the Pyrenees, undoubtedly contributes to the wealth of species that frequent it during the migratory steps, making Plaiaundi a privileged place for the observation of many species. In addition to the birds, other groups of animals find here a suitable habitat, with the presence of the Sapo Corredor, which has a population isolated from the rest of its area of distribution, being notable.
