Naramachi
In the south-west of Nara Park is Naramachi, the former commercial district of Nara. Here you can feel like in a ninja movie walking through the old alleys, full of traditional houses and old stores today turned into crafts shops, restaurants, cafés... Some of them work from small museums that teach you how the Machiya, or traditional houses in the city were. For example, you can enter the traditional Koshi-no-Ie residence, whose visit is totally free. Or learn Japanese history at the Naramachi Shiryokan history museum, also fully free of charge. In addition, you can eat at the traditional Edogawa Naramachi restaurant, specialized in unagi (eel) or the wonderful Sabo Nonnon, where we recommend you to try the chagayu, some rice gachas with very typical Nara tea. We ate there and we loved it. You can also enjoy a green tea and a traditional sweet at the Imanishike Shoin residence. And don't forget to buy a migawari- zaru or hanging monkeys, which decorates almost all of Naramachi's houses. .
