The wall of Buitrago de Lozoya

Buitrago de Lozoya is the only village in the Community of Madrid that still retains its historic walled enclosure. The Buitrago del Lozoya wall is of Muslim origin. It is likely that the first construction was built between the 9th and 11th centuries, in the defensive context of the Media Mark, an extensive area located in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula that the Muslim population fortified to stop the advance of Christian kingdoms and secure Toledo Square. In particular, it protected the passage to the port of Somosilla, one of the main routes of entry of Christian incursions.
