Monastery of Paular

The Royal Monastery of El Paular, a monument declared National Artistic History, is the architectural jewel of the Valle Alto del Loyoza. Its majestic bearing is raised in an incomparable natural framework, about two kilometres from the urban centre of Rascafría, and its origins date back to August 1390, when the one that was the pioneering cartwork of Castilla (and sixth of the Cartjana foundations of Spain) began to be built by the desire of Henry II, who, shortly before he died, said so. His son John I placed the first stone and then several architects intervened in the project - Juan Guas, Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón, Francisco Hurtado and Vicente Acer- until the works were completed in 1442, under the reign of John II. .
