Monastery of San Juan de Duero

The originality of the Monastery of San Juan de Duero makes it one of the most recognized and representative Spanish Romanesque's jewels. Declared a national monument in August 1882, it stands out for its impressive cloister, which retains a collection of styles in its most surprising execution. Romanesque, Mudejar, Arabic shake hands in their arches, adding to their beauty the uniqueness of being different from each other. The originality of this cloister makes it unique in Spain... It was built by the Order of Hospitals of San Juan de Acre, between the 12th and 13th centuries, on the outskirts of the city of Soria, by the river Duero. Only the church and a splendid cloister with mixed influences are preserved from the ancient Romanesque monastery of San Juan de Duero. It is a cloister with an open-sky quadrangular structure from which we highlight its four arches of different order, which are surprised by the interweaving and the capitals carved with the fantasy of the medium. The church is simple, of a single ship and semi-circular apse, the ship is closed with pointed barrel vault and the apse with oven vault. They highlight the two tabs attached to the wall at the beginning of the header. If you have it at hand, read the poem Gerardo Diego dedicated to the arches. If you prefer, give yourself a beckonian note: the mountain in front of you is called the Aimas and by its name the legend is cut without remodeling.
