In't Aepjen

Called "In't Aepjen," it has provided beer, gin, food and accommodation since 1519, and is one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam. "In't Aepjen" literally means "In the Monkeys" and refers to a time at the golden age of the Dutch Empire, when sailors who returned from colonies as far away as Indonesia, and found themselves few florins, paid their bills in monkeys. Today the venerable old tavern is decorated with monkeys wherever you look; carved statues, old posters and oil portraits hanging from the bar. You may no longer be able to pay your bar account with one, but one of the oldest buildings in Amsterdam is still "In't Aepjen.".
