Big Bazaar
The Great Bazaar of Istanbul (Kapalıçarşı) is one of the largest and oldest markets in the world. It is one of the best places in the city to buy crafts, jewelry and clothes. The covered area where the Great Bazar of Istanbul is located has 45,000 square meters and there are about 20,000 people working. The number of visitors per day ranges from 300,000 to 500,000 depending on the time. The Great Bazaar of Istanbul has more than 3,600 shops that are distributed in 64 streets. To access the enclosure there are 22 doors. The origins of the Grand Bazaar go back to the time of Mehmed II, when in 1455 he built near his palace the old bazaar (Eski Bedesten). As in many other cities, workshops of artisans were set up around this building, forming gremial streets. Over time the buildings grew in number and the streets were covered. Soon after, the whole complex was walled. .
