Neptune source

In 1563 by Pope Pius IV, it was built by the architect Tommaso Laureti, while the sculptor Giambologna created the bronze statue of the god of the sea, 3.40 meters high, which is why the Boloñes call it The Giant. It is located in the Piazza del Nettuno, next to the Piazza Maggiore, in the heart of the city. It is a symmetrical work, with a vertical impulse together, with several groups of figures (dolphins, sirens, putti, shields) that surround the main figure of Neptune. Of the 38 nozzles of the bronze figures, there was spring water, a precious good that the Bolognese used immediately for their needs. There was a time when the ladies were getting upset when they walked in front of Neptune's nude and had to put on some little pants to hide their "shame." The author wanted to make the genitals bigger, but the Church prohibited it. Even so, the author managed to make the lifted thumb of the left hand of the god look like an erect penis lying through his crotch, observed the whole from a certain perspective. Today it is one of the monuments that symbolize Bologna and its traditions. They say it's lucky that students take two turns at the source opposite the clock needles before each test.
