Fortress of Montereal
Medieval castle built between the 11th and 17th centuries; the perimeter wall was the last added element. It has three towers: of the Clock, of the Prince and of the Tenaza. Inside the complex are the National Tourist Park and the Monte Real Club de Yates. The fortress can be visited and even take a walk on its walls every day of the year. The fortress of Montereal was one of the bastions of territorial defence in the first disputes between Spain and Portugal, at the time of King Alfonso XI. From the 16th century it had a purely military character, although it had previously served as an accommodation for the village population that was established within the castle. The defensive wall offers a magnificent walk from which you have a beautiful panoramic view of the port of Baiona, the river, the Cis Islands and the Atlantic. It was the residence of the Count of Gondomar, hence the name of the tourist parator installed inside it since the 1960s. Diego Sarmiento, Count of Gondomar, was the governor of this fortress when with the support of Baiona's neighbours he managed to repel Drake's attacks in 1585, three years before Philip II's Invincible Navy entered into combat with the fleet of England.
