Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration
Between 1892 and 1954, Ellis Island was the gateway to the United States for more than 12 million immigrants. More than 100 million Americans are now said to be a descendant of this immigration. The island of Ellis had a main building where all the procedures and controls were carried out, a hospital to care for the people who arrived ill, buildings for the contagious diseases, a large bedroom building and, if not, a port. At the Ellis Island Museum you will find photographs, letters, personal objects and all kinds of memories of the time. You can see from how they carried out health checks to how the most unfortunate were deported. The museum is spread over the three floors of the main building. Outside is the "Wall of Honor" with the names of more than 600,000 immigrants of the time. To get to the island you must take the ferry in Battery Park.
