Edogawa - Naramachi

Edogawa Naramachi is one of the most famous restaurants in Nara, specialized in the Kagoshima grilled eel, on the south-west end of Kyushu Island. Located in a 150-year-old merchant house called machiya that used to specialize in kimonos, Edogawa owes its name to the famous river that crosses Tokyo, so naturally it specializes in a Tokyo-style, or grilled eel, as well as chicken and local Nara vegetables. The relationship between the Japanese and the eels is ancient, as bones have been found in shell mounds of the old Jomon period, so it is believed that the Japanese have been eating eels for more than 5000 years. The fragrant aroma of kabayaki is also much loved by many Japanese, a unique cooking method in which the eel is covered with a sweetened sauce made from soy sauce and Mirin rice wine. In Edogawa, they prepare the eel very carefully in the Tokyo style, that is, they open it, grilled it, steamed it and roast it again with the salty and sweet soy sauce. With a delicious menu focused on the unagi, we chose the Unagi-Teishoku and Tempura-Teishoku lunch that included sashimi, the famous Erogawa grilled eel, a selection of tortilla rolled with eel or chawanmushi, okara, rice, miso soup or eel liver and tsukemono, Japanese preserved vegetables. .
