castle of the mountain
A stone crown supported on a 540-meter-high hill above sea level, which dominates the plateau of the Western Murge in Apulia. Castel del Monte, command fortress built by Federico II around 1240 and registered by UNESCO on the World Heritage List in 1996. This castle is a unique example of the medieval military architecture. Its location, the perfection of its forms and the mathematical and astronomical accuracy of its layout, are exponents of the desire that moved Federico II to make it a symbol of its ambitious designs. Castel del Monte is a perfect sample of the fusion of the architectural forms of the Greek Antiquity, the Muslim East and the Gothic Cistercian of northern Europe.
