The Scrovegni Chapel
The Chapel of the Scrovegni of Padua is an absolute masterpiece of art. Today you can visit only in small groups and after booking. Built by the desire of a rich and powerful usurper, Enrico Scrovegni, it was decorated with frescoes made by Giotto in 855 days, between 1302 and 1305. To be used as a family chapel adjacent to the dazzling palace, built on a Roman amphitheater of the year 60 BC, its interior has almost 1000 square meters of paintings dedicated to the Old and New Testament. Counting different stories of the Old and New Testament, the Universal Judgment, which occupies the whole facade of the chapel and represents Christ the King among the apostles on the forces of evil that take sinners to the depths, emerges among the paintings. The feeling of the whole for which it is within the chapel is to be inside an ark with numerous eyes of ox that frame the tonds of Christ's images between evangelists and prophets. They also highlight the scenes with the virtues and vices of capital, a true vademecum of behavior for the Christians of the time. Under the vaulted cover, which represents a starry sky held by false painted marbles, the forms appear natural and realistic with broad drapes that visually narrate a piece of history of Christianity, inspired by the theologian Saint Augustine. Giotto finished the work while still young, was under forty years old, and is considered all over the world to the same level as the Sistine Chapel of Michelangelo in Rome. .
