Cape Carvoeiro
Cape Carvoeiro is a place of great natural and landscape value, with a wide variety of heavily eroded calcareous cliffs and lapiaz fields. To the west you can see from the cape the small archipelago of the Berlengas, integrated into a natural land and marine reserve. The 25 m high Cape Carvoeiro lighthouse was erected on this site due to the numerous shipwrecks that took place on this stretch of coast. The little chapel of Our Lady of Remedies, on the Cape, is the goal of a busy rosemary. The interior is covered by valuable 18th-century paintings from the workshop of master Antonio de Oliveira Bernardes. In the neighbouring Gruta da Furninha, vestiges of human occupation dating back to prehistoric times were found.
