Urrutia battery
200 years ago, during the famous War of Independence, the Marsh of the Sancti Petri Dam built a natural obstacle to the Napoleonic troops. A witness of that time is the Urrutia Battery, a defensive military construction of the 18th century that was decisive to stop the advance of Napoleon's army on the island of León and in Cadiz. In addition to Urrutia, two other very important batteries were located in this strategic area: Aspiroz and San Genís. The first is practically missing and the one in San Genís is hidden between the dunes about 500 metres south of Urrutia. The main utility of these fortifications during the war was to protect the entrance to San Fernando from the sea by the Caño de Sancti Petri in the face of any incursion of French ships and to resist the French positions on the opposite shore. From its structure, the pillars that formed its perimeter and wall stand out for its good conservation, in which you can observe the hairs by whose intermediate holes the artillery was installed. Between this battery and that of San Genís there was a bridge of boats that served for the Spanish and English troops to pass to Chiclana and violate a sound defeat to the French in the famous Battle of the Barroso in 1881.
