Old Arganda Bridge

Very close to the El Campillo Center, drawing a small detour from the Senda de la Laguna El Campillo from the parking lot, we can visit the famous Arganda Bridge. The bridge owes its fame to its leading role in the Spanish Civil War, most remarkable in the Battle of the Jarama in February 1937, surviving the bombing and other attacks to this day. These and other events in this enclave have brought to the attention of various writers and directors, who return us to that time in films such as Tierra de España de Joris Ivens and Ernest Hemingway and The Time of the Brave, Antonio Mercero or The Spanish boxes of Alberto Porlán. The latter two also recounts the anecdote of the evacuation of the works of art of the Prado Museum, from Madrid to Geneva, where they were until their return to the capital in 1939. When they arrived at the Arganda Bridge, the trucks loaded with the paintings did not enter under the structure of the bridge, so they were forced to unload and transport them by hand, helped by a roller system, which would take 4 hours to get through the bridge and put the pictures safe in their destination.
