St. Victor's Abbey of Marseilles

Although the current building was built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it also contains remains of a 5th century Paleocrist chapel, which was erected by order of Saint Jean- Cassien (ca. 360-ca. 435) on the tomb of St. Victor, a martyr who died in the time of the Maximian Emperor (at the end of the third century). After being destroyed on several occasions, Pope Urban V chose to fortify the abbey in the 14th century. Today, it is one of the most important places of French Catholicism, as well as one of the oldest in Marseilles. From its interior, in which concerts of sacred music are organized regularly, its precious crypt stands out.
