Skansin
Skansinn ("El Fuerte") is popular with locals all year round and for a good reason: it offers spectacular views and the area is full of history. The Skansin fort was built in 1586 to protect itself from English pirates. Skansin's appearance changed considerably after the 1973 volcanic eruption, when more than 2 square kilometres (0.77 square miles) of lava were added to the island. The Hringskersgarður pier, which used to be in the middle of the sea, is now inside the channel. By cooling the lava, the islanders managed to prevent it from flowing on the pier. Instead, the lava is deposited next to it, forming Skansin as we know it today. Skansin now houses the wooden church, the Landlyst museum and a cannon. .
