Seydisfjordur

Between mountains and on the banks of one of Iceland's most beautiful fjords is Seydisfjordur, a small but beautiful typical Icelandic village that well deserves a visit. The history of Seydisfjordur as we know it now does not begin until the early 19th century, when the people were founded as a small commercial enclave. However, the rise in herring fishing made Seydisfjordur the most prosperous town in eastern Iceland. In fact, most of the buildings in the village originate in those golden years, where many Norwegian traders settled in Seydisfjordur. Many of these picturesque wooden buildings were brought from Norway itself, so stopping at Seydisfjordur can be almost validated as a visit to a village in the Norwegian Fields. Decades later, after having served as a basis for the American and British armies, Seydisfjordur entered an economic depression following the gradual recession of the herring industry. Today the city continues to live from fishing (of other species), crafts and tourism, as the port of Seydisfjordur has been consolidated as one of the main stops on any cruise in Iceland. .
