Sanmachi Suji
The old town of Takayama is named after Sanmachi Suji for its three main streets: Ichinomachi Street, Ninomachi Street and Sannomachi Street. This area is perfectly preserved with houses from the Edo period, at which time the city was a rich town of merchants, who today function as museums, art galleries, craft shops or cafés. Here you can enter one of the ancient houses whose architecture has barely changed since the Edo period, such as the house of the Kusakabe family (Kusakabe Mingeikan) or the Yoshijima family (Yoshijima- ke), the archaeological museum Hida Minzoku Kokokan, the Hirata Kinenkan craft museum or to the Fujii Bijutsu Mingeikan art and crafts gallery. As we say, more than the exhibitions we can find there, what really is worth being able to enter such old houses. .
