San Giovanni degli Eremiti

The origins of the church date back to the 6th century. Later, after the Islamic conquest of Sicily, it was converted into a mosque; and with the arrival of the Normans and their establishment in southern Italy, it was returned to Catholics by Rogelio II of Sicily, who entrusted it to the Benedictine monks of Monte Vergine about 1136. It was continuously modified during the later centuries and was restored in 1880, in order to restore its medieval appearance. Among all its architectural elements are its bright red domes, in which the permanence of Arab culture on the island is evident in the time of its reconstruction, in the 12th century. The cloister, with a luxurious garden, is the best preserved part of the old monastery, which stands out for its small double columns decorated with vegetable motifs in its capitals and which bear eye arches. He also has a jibe.
