Astronomical clock

The Prague Astronomical Watch is the world's most famous medieval watch. It was built in 1490 by the watchmaker Hanus and perfected by Jan Taborsky in the 16th century. Legend says that so that Hanus would not repeat his work, the councillors left him blind. The clock is located in the city hall building and consists of three parts. The lower sphere of the Clock Tower represents the months of the year by paintings made by Manes. The signs of the zodiac and, in the center, the Old City Arms Shield can also be seen. The calendar has four small sculptures: a philosopher, an angel, an astronomer and a speaker. The upper sphere of the Clock Tower is the Astronomical Clock itself. Its function was not to give the time, but to represent the orbits of the Sun and the Moon. The main attraction of the watch is the parade of the twelve apostles that occurs every time the clock marks the hours in point from 8: 00 to 20: 00 hours. This parade takes place in the upper windows of the Astronomical Clock. In addition to the apostles you will find four additional figures: the Turkish, the Avarice, the Vanity and the Death, a skeleton that pulling the rope marks the beginning of the parade. .
