Old Port

It's the oldest neighborhood in Bastia. From Place Saint- Nicolas is reached by Rue Napoleon, which has two Baroque oratoriums, the Chapelle Saint- Roch and the Chapelle de l'Immaculée- Conception. The street leads to the Place de l'Hôtel- deVille, better known as Place du Marché (market on Saturday and Sunday morning). The narrow and tortuous alleys, of high houses, that go down to the old port and to the Quai des Martyrs have charm. The most remarkable building in the neighborhood is the very beautiful church of Saint- JeanBaptiste, recognizable by its two symmetrical bells. Completed in 1666, it was redecorated in Baroque style in the 18th century and occupies the southwestern angle of the square. Its best perspective is obtained from the deep inlet of the old port, which dominates masterfully.
