Freedom Bridge
Budapest built its third bridge in 1896, when it was still a capital of the Habsburg Empire. Although this gateway today bears the name Szabadság, 'freedom' in Hungarian, when it opened it was baptized as the bridge of Francis Joseph, in honor of the then emperor. The legend tells that it was the same monarch who placed the last screw on the bridge platform. This work, opened during the millennium celebrations of the foundation of the city, was part of the urban projects to show Budapest as a European and modern city. The infrastructure was elevated with the most advanced technology of the time and using the same cast iron technique used, for example, in the construction of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
