Put on Scaligero

The Castelvecchio Bridge is a fortified bridge in Verona. It was built (probably between 1354-1356) by Cangrande della Scala II, to give it a safe way to escape from the castle of the same name, in case of a population rebellion against its tyrannical government. The strength of the construction allowed him to resist without touching until, at the end of the 18th century, French troops destroyed the tower on the left bank. However, the bridge was completely destroyed, along with the Stone Bridge, by the German troops in retreat on 24 April 1945. A faithful reconstruction began in 1949 and was completed in 1951 with the exception of the left tower. The bridge is made of red brick on the top, as well as all the historical monuments in Verona from the Scaliger era, and in white marble on the bottom. It includes three vessels of decreasing length from pentagonal towers. The largest one, measuring 48.70 m, meant that the bridge was presented at the time of its construction as the largest arch bridge in the world (the others are 29.15 and 24.11 meters). The bridge has a total length of 120 m. Legends According to a legend, Cangrande gave the bridge designer a sword that belonged to Saint Martin. Another legend says the designer showed up at the horse opening, to run away in case the bridge collapsed. .
