Plaza de España

The square has a great atmosphere as there are multiple bars, cafés and terraces, which extend along San Francisco Street to the Plaza Alvarez Acebal. The Plaza España, popularly known as "El Parche," is the epicenter of the historical centre of Avilés. It was built in the 17th century as an area of expansion of the walled complex of the villa (which with the population growth had remained small); this urban growth was called "the Baroque enranche." From it come the most typical and busy streets of the city: La Ferreria, La Cámara, Rivero and San Francisco. .
