Monserrate Palace
The Palace of Monserrate is a suggestive romantic palacete ordered to build as a fifth of family summer by Francis Cook, viscount of Monserrate, an English citizen who made his fortune in the textile industry. The work was directed by the architect James Knowles in 1858 on the ruins of an earlier neoGothic mansion built by the English merchant Gerard de Visme. One of the famous visitors of the original palace was the poet Lord Byron in 1809 who described his beauty in the pilgrimages of Childe Harold.
