Ortygia
Ortigia was an island and fortress of Siracusa, and the original seat of the city. The foundation was 734 BC by Greeks who arrived from Corinth. Syracuse. It was described by Greek travelers as the most beautiful city in the world. Ortygia is today a fascinating set of Greek, Normandy, Aragonese, Venetian and Baroque buildings. With a constant aroma of sea, and overtaken by huge seagulls. The piazza of the Duomo is absolutely great, as is the cathedral, the 'palazzi' that surround it and the Fontana Aretusa. Beyond the streets are tightened, becoming dark passageways where boarding is an adventure. There they live 'mercati' as before with restaurants full of taste, traditional fences and fish shops with luxury object shops and charming hotels. Ortygia is a city to be lost without direction. The alleys are a maze, but sooner or later they lead to the sea. Il'lungomare (the promenade that borders the coast) is one of its most spectacular corners. Don't miss it at sunset, when the sun dours the walls of the impressive Castello Maniace.
