Lagoa do Congro

The Lagoa do Congro is one of those magical places you find around the world wrapped in a special aura. Of those places you don't know very well if it's a good idea to advertise them, or if it's better not to talk about them to keep them secret. To get to Lagoa do Congro you have to be very careful as we drive along the EN4-2A road, as the detour sign is practically at the exit. After moving a step along a dirt lane, we will leave the car on the edge of the road to begin the path that descends to the lagoon. It is a wide and well-defined path that crosses a dense forest of laurisilva, cedars and eucalyptus. The vegetation is so thick, it hardly passes the sunlight. It takes about 20 minutes to get down at a good rate, and about 30 minutes to get up. The glossy green olive lagoon occupies a maar-type volcanic crater. A maar is a wide and low volcanic crater caused by an explosion of groundwater in contact with lava. It is a small lagoon, only 1.5 km of perimeter, which gives it an even more collected atmosphere if it fits the place.
