The Pavona (Embarcadero a Tortuguero)

This is one of the most interesting trips in Costa Rica because it can only be done by boat. To get to La Pavona you can rent a car (there is private parking to leave for 10 $/ night) or go on two buses from San José (making the change in Cariari). It is important to arrive in La Pavona in the morning because the hours of travel on official boats ($4 / person) are not stable and their daily frequency is low (3 trips / day). Another option is to hire a private boat ($10 / person). In La Pavona it is easy to get the ticket or make an agreement. On the pier there is a bar, restaurant and a small shop, as well as an official information post on Tortuguero. On the other hand, from Tortuguero you can only return to the mainland through La Pavona or Moín (in Puerto Limón). During the journey, which lasts about an hour, the boats travel canals and rivers with different flows, among which are located forest islets. It is very easy to see animals; there are many types of birds (the garzas being the queens), also see crocodiles, caimans and iguanas, or spider monkeys, howlers and lazy by the tree cups. Everything around the boat radiates life, nature and freedom, is like being part of an expedition of the time of the first explorers. The patterns of the boats usually stop if they see any interesting animals to observe it well and take pictures. Sometimes during the journey, depending on the water level, you have to change from one boat to another, without prior notice, as part of the charm of this adventure. In Tortuguero, famous for its National Park, a new experience begins. .
