Jökulsárlon

Jökulsárlón is Iceland's most famous and large glacier lagoon, with an area of approximately 20 square kilometres and more than 200 metres deep. In addition to its size, this lagoon is an essential destination in any route through Iceland due to the large amount of icebergs floating in its waters. As for the origin of this glacier lagoon, however it may seem, it is quite recent. So much so, until less than 100 years ago Jökulsárlon did not exist, as the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier (which is part of the Vatnajökull glacier) extended even beyond the bypass road. Unfortunately, the rise in the temperature of the planet has caused the glacier to recede, as explained in the Perlan Museum of Reikiavik, generating this impressive glacier lagoon. In addition, as in other places in Iceland such as Ytri Tunga or Hvitans, it is also possible to see seals in Jökulsárlón if there is luck and enough attention is paid.
