Island of Governors

Fort Jay

Fort Jay

In 1794, when the country needed a coastal defence system, the construction of Fort Jay was started on a high ground in the centre of Governors Island. In 1800, New York transferred the island to the United States government for military use. Between 1806 and 1809, the American army rebuilt Fort Jay and built Castle Williams in a rocky settlement in front of the port.

The Island of Governors - Governors Island- is a visit that can only be made between May and October, as it only opens during the warm months. If you're in town at that time, take advantage! Until 2001 it was a mysterious islet. Today is a beautiful park with historical fortifications, many picnic areas and, above all, one of the best views of southern Manhattan possible.
