Rupestre Church in Budapest
The Rupéstre Church of Budapest, inspired by the Sanctuary of Lourdes, is located on the south side of Mount Gellért, excavated in the bowels of the hill, which makes it a very special sanctuary. Inside, in addition to the beauty of the construction itself, one can highlight a copy of the Black Virgin of Czestochowa and a painting of San Kolbe, a Polish monk who gave his life to protect other prisoners in the Auschwitz Concentration Field. At the beginning, the church was intended for the order of the Pauline parents. One hundred and fifty years after Joseph II had forced the disappearance of the order in Hungary, fifteen monks who were exiled in Poland returned to their church in Budapest, until the communist government banned worship in the church and closed their entrance. The church and its monastery remained closed from the 1950s to 1989 and, since then, the church has not been closed again. The Rupestre Church is completely different from the other temples, so it well deserves a courtesy visit. Far from the ostentatious golden ornaments of other churches, the Rupestre Church is practically a cave, a place fully destined for worship with a very special charm.
