Grinzing

Grinzing, the 19th district, is a district in the north of Vienna, in the mountain, characterized by its vineyards and its Heurigen. These Heurigen are typical Austrian premises where wine is served by the local owners themselves. Legally, they can only sell wine from their own harvest and only open certain periods of the year, when the wine is about to be drunk. There you can also eat typical Austrian products, such as potato salad, Schnitzel, Gulash... served by waitresses dressed with dirndls (the typical Austrian suit) while Schrammelmusik, the typical Austrian popular music. To know that the Heuriger is open, you have to look at the front door: if it has a pine branch hanging, it means that the wine is ready and you can go in and drink. Not only are there Heurigen in Grinzing, there are also many distributed around the rest of the city, but in Grinzing there are no more or less than 30, and the environment in them is much more authentic. In Grinzing, apart from the taverns, there is a magnificent view of the rest of the city. As it is located on Cobenzl hill, Vienna appears in all its fullness in front of Grinzing. It is a wonder to see the city from the Wiener Wald, the Vienna forest. Grinzing looks like a small town, with its small houses with gardens and alleys. And it was in fact, in the past, a separate town from Vienna but, as the city grew, it was incorporated as one more neighborhood. Grinzing is the ideal place if you are lovers of wine, good food and bucolic landscapes, as this is a part of Vienna that has nothing to do with the rest of the city. It is the deepest and quieter Vienna. You can reach the metro line U4 to the end (Heiligenstadt station) and there take tram 38 to Grinzing station, which is in the central square of the neighborhood. If you continue with bus 38A, you will reach Cobenzl hill and Kahlenberg mountain.
