Fraunces Tavern

This beautiful federal-style building is one of the oldest in the city and contrasts, for its small size, next to the towers of the Financial District. It was built in 1719 and served as the residence of French merchant Etienne de Lancey until Samuel Fraunces acquired it in 1762 to make it a tavern. Here was an emotional farewell of George Washington to his officers in 1783, following the victory in the War of Independence. The building was acquired and restored in 1904 by the association "Children of the Revolution of the State of New York," after a serious threat of ruin and opened its doors in 1907. The ground floor has a restaurant that gives access to the museum located on the upper floors. Decorative elements, engravings, paintings and weapons of colonial times and revolution, in permanent and temporary exhibitions, form this historic museum.
