Palamidi Fortress
Nailed on the top of a cliff overlooking Nauplia and the Argolic Gulf, the Palamidi Fortress is impressive for its architecture. Walk between the solid stone walls of the fortress to discover very well preserved bastions and monuments. The Venetian built the fortress in the early 18th century and the Ottomans continued the work after their conquest of the city in 1715. The fortress took its name from Palamedes, Greek mythological hero of the Trojan War. To access the fortress, there are two options: one of them is to climb up the ladder of more than 800 steps that ascend the steep hill towards the west entrance. During the climb, the views of Nauplia and its surroundings improve with each step. Do not stop looking at the original vaulted staircase, which is characterized by the roof holes that help provide ventilation. The other option is to get by car to the main entrance located in the east wing.
