Dimmuborgir
Dimmuborgir is one of the best examples of the volcanic hyperactivity of Lake Myvatn. Formed two millennia ago, these solidified lava fields can be crossed by signposted paths. Some 2300 years ago, in line with Iceland's volcanic activity, a major eruption occurred in the vicinity of Lake Myvatn. In the area where Dimmuborgir is currently erected (meaning "dark castles"), the lava reached an old swamp. It was precisely that mixture between incandescent lava and water that, through geological processes, created the spectacular rock formations that can be visited today in Dimmuborgir. Through signposted paths, of different difficulty and duration, it is possible to walk the park of Dimmuborgir and admire these "dark castles" that awaken the imagination of everyone who visits it: some look like an animal, others are natural arches... and even one looks like a Gothic church! !
