Seen from the sea, the angular and solid contours of the citadel of Ajaccio seem to challenge the visitor. During the French occupation, from 1553 to 1559, the Marshal of Termes conceived the building around a pre-existing castle. Pit, towers and curtains reinforced the protection of this city, which was already fortified since 1502. Other corrupt citadels, such as Corte or Bonifacio, progressively lost their defensive role and ended up opening their heavy doors to tourists. But the guards of the citadel of Ajaccio were not of the same opinion and the inhabitants of the city ignored for many years what those thick walls were hiding. In 2001, the fearsome reputation of this building - still under military authority - made it even the safe of the greatest treasure that the island would ever have seen: it was here that the euros, in small notes and coins, had to wait to replace the Corsica francs.
