Castle of the Templars
The Castle of Ponferrada was originally a pre-Roman herb and then a citadel, which was devastated in the ninth century, was rebuilt and fortified in the eleventh century. In the 12th century, the kings of Leon donated Ponferrada to the Order of the Temple with the mission of helping the pilgrims who passed through that territory. The Castle began to be built in the 11th century and belonged to the Templars until, in 1,312, the Order was dissolved and passed to the Crown of Lion. In 1,486 it was owned by the Catholic Kings. The Castle we know today is the result of a long series of enlargements, reforms and additions ranging from the first close to the square floor in the early 12th century to the last areas built in the late 15th and early 16th century. Subsequent additions and numerous reforms since the early 20th century have contributed to the complexity of the whole, as we know it today. The shields and blasphemies of those who occupied it and contributed to its construction are proof of its different stages. It should be noted that it is very well preserved, the only thing to be careful about is that Sundays only open until 2: 00 noon.
