Castello Di Sirmione
The castle of Sirmione is a lacustre fortification that is located in the city of the same name. This is one of the constructions of this type best preserved in Italy. The castle is located on the edge of Lake di Garda and part of it is immersed in the water forming a dársena of access. The continuation of that dársena creates, towards the opposite facade, a flood pit. Built in the middle of the 13th century, it lies on the foundations of a Roman structure of unknown use, although it is supposed to be linked to water, just a century later it is complemented by a second volume that is joined with a barbacan to the initial structure. In 1405, Sirmione was subjected to Venetian control, and it was defensively reinforced. Until the 16th century it will maintain its defensive position, which will be overcome for political reasons by the Peschiera del Garda, a more modern fortress. .
